Chop asparagus into bite-size pieces. Add to a pot of salted boiling water and cook for 3 minutes. Drain (BUT KEEP COOKING WATER) and place in the bottom of a greased baking dish.
In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until blended.
Add reserved cooking water and cream and whisk until thickened and smooth. Season with salt & pepper and pour over asparagus.
Sprinkle with cheese and then bread crumbs. Put under broiler for a few minutes until top is golden brown.
