Herbal infused oils are a versatile way to extract the beneficial properties of herbs for ointments, creams, salves, massage oils, and skin care preparations. When properly prepared and stored, infused oils generally last at least 1 year, and often longer.
There are two common methods for making infused oils: a hot infusion for quicker results, or a cold infusion for a slower, traditional extraction.
Hot Infusion Method Best for: Faster preparation when you want infused oil ready within a day.
Ingredients
¼ lb dried herb (or ⅓ lb fresh herb)
2 cups carrier oil (sunflower, safflower, olive, or similar oil)
Instructions
Set up a double boiler using either:
A traditional double boiler, or
A heat-safe stainless steel bowl placed over a saucepan of water.
Fill the lower pan with water. Add the herbs and oil to the top pan or bowl.
Heat over medium-low heat, keeping the mixture warm but not boiling.
Check the water level regularly and refill as needed to prevent it from boiling dry.
Gently heat for about 3 hours to allow the herbs to infuse into the oil.
Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean pitcher or bowl.
Allow the oil to cool completely, then transfer to clean glass bottles.
Storage: Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
Cold Infusion Method Best for: Traditional, slow extraction and delicate herbs.
Ingredients
Fresh or dried herbs
Carrier oil (such as walnut, safflower, sunflower, or olive oil)
Instructions
Fill a wide-mouth glass jar (such as a 2 lb storage jar) tightly with herbs, leaving about 1 inch of space at the top.
Pour oil over the herbs until fully submerged, ensuring all plant material is covered.
Seal the jar and place it in a sunny indoor location for at least 3 weeks.
Strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, squeezing out as much oil as possible.
For a stronger infusion, repeat the process:
Add fresh herbs to a clean jar.
Pour the first infused oil over the herbs.
Return to a sunny location for an additional 2-3 weeks.
Strain again and transfer to dark glass bottles.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight for 1 year or longer.
