How to Make Herbal Syrups

Herbal syrups are a delicious and soothing way to preserve the benefits of herbs while making them easier to take, especially for coughs, sore throats, or daily wellness support. Depending on the sugar or honey ratio and storage method, syrups can last up to 6 months in the refrigerator or indefinitely in the freezer.

Basic Herbal Syrup
A simple syrup made from herbal tea.
  1. Prepare 2 cups of strong herbal tea. (How to Make Herbal Teas/Infusions/Decoctions)
  2. Pour into a stainless steel or cast-iron saucepan.
  3. Add 2 cups sugar or honey.
  4. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring until fully dissolved and the mixture thickens slightly into a light syrup.
  5. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.
  6. Transfer to a glass bottle for storage.
Storage Tip: Use a cork-top or loosely sealed bottle rather than an airtight lid, as syrups may ferment and build pressure over time.
Suggested Use: Take 1-2 teaspoons every 3-4 hours, as needed.

Syrup from an Herbal Infusion or Decoction
Best for stronger herbal preparations.
  1. Prepare an herbal infusion or decoction. (How to Make Herbal Teas/Infusions/Decoctions)
  2. For every 250 mL of liquid, add 250 g sugar.
  3. Heat gently until the sugar dissolves completely.
  4. Simmer gently until the mixture thickens into a syrup consistency.
  5. Pour into sterilized glass bottles.
Storage: Properly stored in a cool, dark place, syrups may last 6-12 months.

Honey-Based Herbal Syrups
Honey creates a soothing syrup and acts as a natural preservative.
  • For a longer-lasting syrup, use a 1:1 ratio of honey to decoction (equal parts).
  • For a lighter syrup, use a 1:2 ratio (1 part honey to 2 parts infusion).
Note: A higher honey content helps extend shelf life.
