How to Make Herbal Vinegars

Herbal vinegars are flavorful, shelf-stable preparations that can be used internally or externally.

How to Make an Herbal Vinegar
  • Finely chop fresh herbs or lightly crush dried herbs.
  • Fill a jar ¾ full with fresh herbs or ½ full with dried herbs.
  • Cover with vinegar until herbs are submerged by about 1 inch.
  • Seal tightly and store in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks, shaking occasionally.
  • Strain, squeeze out excess liquid, and transfer to a dark glass bottle.

Choosing a Vinegar
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Best all-purpose option for culinary and cosmetic use
  • Balsamic, Wine, or Rice Vinegar: Ideal for culinary preparations
  • Distilled Vinegar: Best for cleaning sprays or laundry applications

Storage: Store in a cool place for up to 6 months, or refrigerate for up to 1 year.

Ways to Use Herbal Vinegar
  • Daily Vinegar Shot: Mix 1 part herbal vinegar with 3 parts water. Rinse your mouth afterward to help protect tooth enamel.
  • Hair Rinse: Mix 1 part herbal vinegar with 4 parts water, add optional essential oils, and pour over clean hair.
  • Salad Dressing: Mix 3 parts olive oil with 1 part herbal vinegar, season to taste, and shake well.
  • Skin Toner: Best for oily skin. Mix 2 tablespoons herbal vinegar with 8 oz water and apply to clean skin with a cotton pad.
